The outer lining is black which keeps unwanted light from been reflected through into your photos depending on the effect you require.
This outer black layer can be completely removed by unattahing from the spines and then a simple unscrew allows the layer to be left off completely leaving just the white/refelective silver layer.
This type of surface will spread the source of light instead of concentrating the light in one spot (from source) producing a wide spread of softer light.
The design of the internal reflective surface gives maximum reflection possible.
