The inner lining is silver for even distribution of soft light, increased contrast and highlights.
The outer lining is black which keeps unwanted light from been reflected through into your photos, depending on the effect you require.
This outer black layer can be completely removed by attaching from the spines and then a simple unscrew allows the layer to be left off completely leaving just the white/reflective silver layer.
This type of surface will spread the source of light instead of concentrating the light in one spot (from source), producing a wide spread of softer light.
The design of the internal reflective surface gives the maximum reflection possible.
